5ive Points – Adam Myerson

NYC Velo is proud to have New England racing legend Adam Myerson take part in our 5 points series.  Adam’s palmares are extensive, including decades of racing professionally on the domestic road and cyclocross circuits as well as taking home the title of National Champion in the 1997 Collegiate Cyclocross Championships.

Adam continues to race at the highest level during the road season for Team Mountain Khakis fueled by Jittery Joe’s and for Team Cycle-Smart during the cyclocross season in the fall and winter.  Adam is the founder and president of the Cycle-Smart Coaching company, a former member of the UCI Cyclocross Commission, and is the organizer of one of the East Coast’s most popular (and oldest) UCI-registered cyclocross races – the weekend-long Cycle-Smart International Cyclocross.

In addition to his prowess on a bike, Adam promotes vegetarian practices for elite athletes and shares our passion for good espresso and Belgian beer – and we’re not talking about Stella.  Adam is also a prolific “tweeter” – put him on your follow list and see what we mean.

And finally, the answers:

NYC Velo: What bike do you ride?

Adam Myerson: This season we’re riding Jack Kane bikes on the road, and I’ll be back on a Van Dessel for ‘cross. I’m really looking forward to the new carbon ‘cross bike from Edwin at Van Dessel.

NYCV: What’s your favorite ride/route?

AM: At home I really like following the Charles River Wheelmen’s route markings through Dover and Sherborne. There are so many little roads out there southwest of Boston where I do most of my riding. When I’m traveling, I really like the Madera Canyon climb in Tucson, and the Triple Hump ride in Winston-Salem.

NYCV: What’s your favorite post-ride food?

AM: I have a cereal problem. Usually the first thing I want when I come in is some kind of sweet, dessert cereal.

NYCV: What’s one thing you always carry on a ride?

AM: 2 spare tubes and a full size frame pump. If you’re serious about your training ride, you don’t want to have to go home after a flat because you don’t have a second spare. And if you flat once, the odds of flatting a second time are usually pretty good. I also think CO2 cartridges are wasteful and unnecessary. Carry a real pump, people.

NYCV: What’s next for you in cycling?

AM: Short term, I’ll be focusing on the big East Coast crits and the USA Crits series, then the ‘cross NRC in the fall. Long term, it’s hard to say. I’d like to keep racing and have the form and motivation to do it, but it’ll depend on what kind of contract I can get for 2011. Otherwise, I’ll look forward to racing for fun again and focusing on my coaching business.
