5ive Points – Jason Benford of De La Paz Coffee

Jason Benford, left, in front of the De La Paz roaster.

While visiting the West Coast recently, Andrew met Jason Benford, owner of De La Paz Coffee in SF.
Aside from sourcing and roasting some incredibly good single-origin coffees and experimenting with their La Marzocco Paddle Group GS3 espresso machine, Jason does a lot of off-road adventure touring, including riding old railroads on a custom rigged Rick Hunter frame. In addition, De La Paz is known for delivering their coffee beans around town via bicycle and for sponsoring Team Murder, an SF-based CX racing team. Check out their website for an ever-expanding list of cafes pulling and pouring De La Paz in the Bay Area (or stop by NYC Velo for a 14th Street espresso shot).
Jason was kind enough to subject himself to answer our 5ive Points interview:

NYC Velo: What bike do you ride?
Jason Benford: A variety of Hunter Cycles.

NYCV: What’s your favorite ride/route?
JB: Yesterday it was riding in the Los Padres National Forest. From New Cuyama to Santa Barbara.

NYCV: What’s your favorite post-ride food?
JB: Double double and fries.

NYCV: What’s one thing you always carry on a ride?
JB: Frame pump.

NYCV: What’s next for you in cycling?
JB: Rest. Then the Shasta Hill Climb.

Thanks Jason!
