Around this time last year, buzz started building for the 2009 Single Speed World Championships in Durango, CO. The craziness surrounding this series has been detailed extensively by much better storytellers than us, so we’ll limit our coverage to one aspect – the entry form:
In order to compete, prospective racers had to print out and color in the entry form, fill in their name, hometown, and age and mail it to Colorado. While many of the entries were quite colorful and imaginative, and others were the obvious results of controlled substances, one stood out from the crowd. Our friend Chris McNally – illustrator and cyclocross racer – painted his entry on a circa 1970′s moto helmet, along with a bevy of otherworldly characters. While the entry didn’t win him the race (and that midcourse bourbon didn’t help) the helmet entry garnered him immediate fame.
And probably lice as well.
