NYC Velo Signature Industry 9 Hubs + ENVE 45 Rims = “Magic Bullets”
This was a particularly fun wheel building project, and an excellent way of utilizing our signature hubs. The ENVE 45 rims used are described by ENVE as the “Magic Bullet”, in that they have incredible versatility. Strong enough for everyday training but light and fast enough for racing, the 45’s really deliver. The wheels were assembled using Sapim CX-Ray spokes, a low profile bladed spoke that is both lightweight and durable. Despite the admirable qualities of the rims and spokes, the star of this show was our signature NYC Velo hubs, manufactured for us by Industry-9 in Asheville, North Carolina. These hubs utilize a radial pawl/ratchet mechanism that provides solid engagement that is less sensitive to cold weather use than other high-end hubs, perfect for New England’s wintertime die-hards. Industry-9’s roots are in making tough mountain bike hubs, and their legendary durability carries over to our slimmed-down signature road hubs. Our hubs use a unique 2:1 rear spoke lacing pattern (16 on the drive-side, 8 on the non drive-side). With 24 spokes on the rear wheel, our subject wheel still has the same amount of load bearing spokes as a 32 spoke wheel, and the reduced number of non-drive spokes allowed us to use higher tension on all of the spokes, which is good.
