Engineering: it’s what they do. The 2012 Scott Carbon Scale Expert 29′er

The engineers at Scott Bicycles are back at it again. Like kids set free in a toy store, these bike gurus head straight to the best tools, materials and technologies they can find to build the ultimate toys for the bike enthusiast. The 2012 Scale 29 Expert (little brother to Scott’s 899 29′er aka the lightest 29 mountain bike frame around at 899 grams) is an impossible mountain bike model to ignore given its enviable combination of cutting edge technology, extensive R&D, and affordable price.

For 2012 this softer riding hard-tail has more built-in compliance, meaning that the bike can flex vertically to absorb trail or street feedback, yet is laterally stiffer for more efficient climbing and faster acceleration — a few more steps towards the “holy grail” of ride qualities. Scott has once again raised the “laterally stiff/vertically compliant” bar for the MTB industry.

Though the 29′er wheel is larger than its cousin the 26″, the Scale’s carefully considered geometry makes it a tight and nimble handing machine, dominating rocks, trees, cars and street construction. The Scale’s nimble handling, combined with the inherent ability of the larger 29 inch wheels to roll over technical terrain, its light/efficient/compliant carbon frame, Shimano XT/SLX components, DT Swiss wheels, and Reba Rock Shox fork make this a ride we highly recommend.

Bike of the Week: Scott F01L

Your next bike very well may be at NYC Velo right now.

The new Scott (F01L) FOIL is nestled appropriately between the Addict and Plasma in its road bike lineup. The FOIL takes all the performance characteristics of the Addict (stiff, light race geometry) and combines it with their accumulated wind tunnel knowledge, creating a perfect balance of Lightweight, Aero and Stiffness resulting in what SCOTT is calling “the most advanced Road Racing bike available.”

This is a highly awaited bike from Scott that first showed its head-tube as a prototype in the 2010 Tour de France, winning stage 5 while strapped to the legs of Mark Cavendish. According to Scott, the Project F01 (its code name while still a prototype) weighs just five percent more than an Addict (while retaining the same stiffness) yet frame drag is reduced by 20-30 percent. As a result of the drag reduction says Scott, this will allow the ” rider to put out roughly 4% to 5% less power to maintain the same speed.”

With an impressive 840g bare frame weight (or a 1,277g fuselage weight with frame, fork, seatpost and clamp) that should satisfy even finicky climbers but also a significant 20W power saving at speed (based on a 300W output). According to Scott, this means the FO1L is not only faster and more aerodynamic than the Cervélo S3 but also substantially lighter and more efficient under power.

A full size run of F01L bikes are available to test ride at NYC Velo, stop by to ride one for yourself!

The Scott F01L

Our Scott rep recently sent us some info about what they’ve been keeping so busy with.  Well, there it is.  Check out this video to learn about the The birth of Scott’s NEW F01L (FOIL) race machine “stronger, lighter, faster.”
Recently there has been a huge emphasis on making sure that top of the line road bikes share (at least in part) the aerodynamic benefits of a more dedicated aero/TT frame.  Scott’s new F01L is a great example of everything coming together seamlessly.   It’s also a testament to beautiful, thoughtful design.

5ive Points: Evelyn Stevens

5-points.png

This week’s installment of 5ive Points has been a long time coming.

What can we say about Evie that hasn’t been said already by the likes of Vogue, Bicycling Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal?   On all accounts,  Evie is a straight-up two-wheeled sensation.    She started out two years ago by winning many of the biggest races in our area, such as Fitchburg, GMSR, Battenkill, and Housatonic Hills.  About a year ago, Evie traded in her pant-suits in finance for lycra and joined team HTC-Columbia, (alongside Mark Cavendish, George Hincapie, and Ina Teutenberg) taking the world of professional women’s racing by storm.  She proceeded to win stages at both Redlands and the Route de France,  as well as finishing 2nd overall at the Route.

The best part of this whole story is that we got to watch this fantasy story happen right in front of our eyes.  We can still remember her passing the pro women’s field at GMSR while riding a 30 lb road bike with a triple.  The NYC Community is a huge fan of Evie’s, and we’re definitely on the bandwagon.

NYCV: What bike do you ride these days?

ES: I am on a Scott and I love it!

NYCV: What’s your favorite ride?

ES: I am currently living in Girona, Spain and I would have to say my favorite ride is anytime I am riding along the coast

NYCV: What’s your favorite post-ride food?

ES: Lately I am returning home from my rides at lunch time and my current food of choice is a salad made with tuna, beets, a hard boiled egg, carrots, celery, mushrooms and cilantro with balsamic vinegar and a dab of pesto, sans lettuce.

NYCV: What’s one thing you always carry on a ride?

ES: I have an uncanny ability to get lost when I am riding so I always bring my HTC phone with me since it has GPS on it, key in helping me figure out where I am. Also, I always carry food, I hate bonking.

NYCV: What’s next for you?

ES: I am currently about to start day 2 of the Hollands ladies tour and then I have the world championships in Geelong, Australia.

Good luck, Evie!

Welcome to Dealer Camp: Park City, UT

It’s not often that we bike shop guys get out of the city to ride…out of the city meaning beyond a 3 hour (by bike) radius of NYC. It’s an even rarer occurrence for us to get a “some expenses paid” trip out west to dig deeper into the behind-the-scenes world of the bike industry.

I was “honored” to be invited to attend the inaugural Dealer Camp in Park City, UT. Officially, 54 industry brands presented to 120 dealers or so in attempts to get them to order product at the front end of the upcoming year’s buying cycle.

While in Park City, a beautiful 7100 feet or so above the sea, I put in 3 hours or so on the new Ridley Dean carbon road bike on one afternoon and another 3 hrs the following day on the 2011 Scott 949 carbon 29er hardtail. The non-gravel roads around Park City are well paved, the gravel ones are sh*t, though all afford some pretty amazing vistas. The MTB trails lead up to the top of Bald Mtn, topping out at 9400 feet. Word on the proverbial street was that there are 400 miles of off road trails in the Park City vicinity, so I’m confident that you can ride up to the top of most of the surrounding peaks should your legs have the juice. Refueling is easy in Park City proper: Einstein Bros bagels and solid coffee and espresso offerings from Atticus pre-ride and post-ride pizza from Davanza’s in Old Town.

While my “test” rides on the Ridley and Scott were work the price of admission, the jewel of the trip came on the last day, leading up to the redeye flight back home (always a good idea…). I filled my final day with a 9 hour jaunt over to Daniel Summit and Strawberry Reservoir on the 2011 BH R1 (similar to the G5, but made with different carbon and forgoing the integrated seatmast). Had I stayed on the pavement, the 9 hours would have been more like 6 or 7, but the Reynolds cabon clincher were begging for a little adventure. Adventure, of course, they found, in the form of 10 miles of washed out dirt roads tumbling off the backside of Daniel Summit to Wallsburg and the closed-in-the-winter pebble-climb up the backside of Flagstaff Mountain before descending back into Park City.

The scenery around Park City was certainly inspiring…it inspired me to get on borrowed bikes and ride as far as daylight would allow. The crappy applephone photos tell the rest of the story.

BOTW – Scott Addict R3

The 2010 Addict R3 has arrived, and it’s clear to us why this remains the workhorse model for Scott. If you’re looking for a great road bike that can handle training and racing, take a very close look at the Addict. It offers a nice balance between price and performance (modern carbon construction paired with Shimano 105).

We also love the killer look of this bike with its simple and bold black-on-white color scheme.
